Happy Birthday, Jesus!
Found Object Nativity Scene, installation created by members of the
First Christian Church of Huntsville, TX. 2010
So! Now the nativity scene is in place and has been there for all services in December. Click on the image to get a bigger picture. (BTW the photo of the scene above was the basis of my Christmas card this year.)
Click on the image of baby Jesus to make it larger so you can see that the arms and hands are made of stacked keys and the fingers of the hands are bent key shafts.
Wise Man with Gift of Frankincense
Each character in the Nativity was created by more than one person usually. I was responsible for the first two wise men and contributed significantly to the third wise man. (Can you spot the old crock pot in the first one?)
Do you recognize the old lamp base in this second wise man?
Check out his beard made by hanging various springs together - the brainstorm of a jr. high student.
Shepherd Keeping Watch in the Field
Notice his skirt and arms are made of old gutters. He is holding a baby sheep.
The baby sheep is hard to see in photos. Can you discern his head and ears made of a tea strainer? His fluffy body is made of many, many, pieces of hardware like nuts, bolts, keys, rings, etc.
Small Sheep
Are you familiar with the toilet part that makes this small sheep's face?
We all voted the camel as the most clever use of found objects. Can you spot the hand mixer? The telphone cradle? The soda can bottoms for ears and eyes? Just precious!
As an after thought, when the church staff was putting wreaths on their office doors, we decided to make a wreath for our studio door, too - complete with wire bow at the top. My grandchildren were there that day and they helped me decorate this wreath. Thanks Kade, Carly, and Korie.
Found Object Christmas Wreath Assemblage
We have realized one thing, you cannot take good pictures of a found object nativity scene! Wish you could see it in person. It is awesome and as our minister, Kyle, says, "It'll preach." He proved it by using the scene as the basis of his sermon last Sunday complete with PowerPoint pictures on the big screen.
Wishing You a Joyous Christmas
I bring you good news
of great joy that will be
for all the people.
Today in the Town of David
a Savior has been born to you; He is
CHRIST the LORD.
Luke 2:10-11
Happy Birthday, Jesus
Thank your heavenly Father for the birth of Jesus to enable our redemption. Amen.
Oh Sally, it's wonderful! I'm going to share these with our church planning team. (I told them about your initial idea, and everyone thought it sounded great.) They'll love it!
